What is a water fuel cell? The water electrolysis process explained

If you have been even just a little attention to all of the technologies surrounding alternative fuels, you have heard the term 'Fuel Cell'. Like it did for us, this term probably had little meaning to you, other than it sounding a bit like a battery, or at least something clean and contained. All in all, it sounded like something pretty advanced and futuristic.

Yet just like the early days of the automobile when people were making engines in their garages, a fuel cell system is something that is as revolutionary as the automobile itself, and is also being made by people in their garages. As discussions and controversy over alternative fuels rage, one solution that keeps cropping up is Hydrogen. It is the most common element in the universe, and when it burns with Oxygen, it creates water.

So if it's so common, why aren't there hydrogen cars everywhere? Well, one of the first issues is transportation, and the second is storage. Transporting hydrogen all over the nation is dangerous, and storing it presents all of its own challenges. Norway has created a hydrogen highway, where there are pre-existing fuel stations that generate hydrogen on the spot to deal with this issue. But Norway's a lot smaller than the US and creating a network of hydrogen stations that have the ability to create their own fuel would be expensive and time consuming to set up. Especially foolish to create and store hydrogen in a station and then haul it around in your car when your car can haul around water and turn it into hydrogen on the spot.

Enter the Water Fuel Cell
Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, and it is most certainly flammable. The most common supply of Hydrogen in the world is water. The solution is one that has been sitting under our noses for some time. Haul water around. It's benign and easily accessible. When you need it, extract the hydrogen and release the oxygen into the air. You create fuel and oxygen in a single process. A water fuel cell does just that.

If this is possible, why isn't the technology everywhere?
That's an argument we hear a lot. It's not a very good argument as we all know that dumb things are done all the time which smart ideas are ignored. We also all know that there is a lot of money in oil. A lot of money. Oil is the single largest industry in the world. It's not going to go away quickly, or without a fight.

Search for water for fuel on YouTube. You will find dozens of videos showing systems that extract hydrogen from water. Yeah, some of them are a bit questionable, but some are very thorough and well explained. This stuff is real!

We know your hesitation; we thought this was a crazy idea too. Until the last time we gassed up and saw the pump say $3.50 for regular. It's pretty much a guarantee that we'll see gas top $4/gallon this summer and stay there for some time. So we decided that we could sit by the sidelines and wait for the government and big oil to bring a real solution, or try to take charge of our own destiny. Because let's face it. No one should expect the oil industry to cancel themselves out, and their lobby is very strong on Capitol Hill.

Is there anything available to take advantage of?
Like anything there are a lot of scams and half truths out there. We've looked through them and found several that we find to be reliable, and also have proven track records. There are some complete products out there, but we think that if you have the ability, these products that explain the actual process and give you the tools to improve and tweak the system are far superior. Or, if you don't want to, you can buy the instructions and have a trusted mechanic install the system for you.
